On the 21st April 2015 Google will start using mobile friendliness as a ranking factor. This change effects searches made on a mobile device and will mean that websites that are mobile friendly will be prioritised. This is better for the user as they get results that will display well on their device and are easier to access.
What does this mean?
If your site is not mobile friendly you may see that your ranking for a search preformed on a mobile device drops. This change will not affect searches made on a desktop and will only effect results made on a mobile device.
How can I check my site is mobile friendly?
Google offers a handy tool for checking if your site is mobile friendly: https://search.google.com/search-console/mobile-friendly
Simply enter the URL of your website and press the enter key. Google will let you know if your website is mobile friendly or not.
What can I do if my site is not mobile friendly?
Google recommends having a responsive website. Responsive web design means having one website which adapts to the device it is displayed on. See Google’s page on responsive web design
If your current website is not responsive you may be able to adapt it to be responsive, although it is more advisable to redesign your site with mobile users in mind, adapting the site can be a cost effective interim fix.
